One hot minute

Almost two months to the day since I last blogged and it has been ridiculously intense. I would say sorry but honestly, I’m not. Sometimes you need a break, even an unplanned one, and sometimes you just need to not say sorry. Which is in fact a goal that I am working towards this year. Quit saying sorry. I seriously say it way too much. But moving on, this will probably be easiest done in list form. So I present to you:

The 5 Crazy Ridiculous Things That Have Happened The Last two Months

01) All the Single Ladies: Welp. I’m single again. I’m okay, honestly, and so is C. We’re still friends, we still talk. But we almost never saw each other because of our conflicting work schedules. Add to that the fact that he was never really willing to come to my area because he “doesn’t like it” plus the fact that he didn’t want children at all, after all, and well, that pretty much summed it up. Very sweet guy. In fact, probably the sweetest guy I’ve ever dated and he never cheated on me or hit me, so hey, aces! (The not cheating part is actually a first for me. Every ex of mine has.) I was sad, but I knew it was coming and I’m pretty sure he did too. I honestly wish him all the luck in finding a woman better matched for him and hope all the best for him. I’d be there for him if he needed me and I know he would for me. In fact, he’s already helped me out. Which brings us to number 2.

Valentine's Day movie time
(How I spent my Valentine’s Day and my brand new tower!)

02) Welcome to the Future: I splurged and spent my tax return on myself. Completely and utterly. It’s also the first time in … oh about 8 years that I haven’t had to use my tax return to pay my rent or pay off late bills. So I treated myself to a brand new desktop PC. And I’m in love. I loved my laptop but I bought it in 2011 and it’s … really slow. Plus I used to be somewhat of a gamer and I missed playing games. My laptop couldn’t run them. Not easily anyway. So I made the leap. I will say, at first I regretted it. It came with Windows 10 installed and it was a FUCKING disaster. C, actually came to my rescue and fixed my new desktop, not once, but twice. And now with that poisonous WinBLOWS 10 off, and Windows 7 on it, I’ve not had one problem. And now I can easily blog without my pc lagging like crazy. YAY! And that’s partially why I was gone for so long. On that laptop, blogging became a chore and it should never be that way.

03) Just Call Me Troublemaker: I’ve mentioned before that there have been issues at my work. And sadly, they’ve continued. After the holidays, our manager stepped down and switched new departments and I was really happy to have someone knew. Plus we got a new food manager so I thought things would be turning around. They haven’t. It got to bad that I had to file a grievance against our food manager because he was giving me 24 hours and giving the newest (MALE) employee in our department, 40 hours. Which is against the union contract. So I’ve gotten my hours back but it feels like everyone hates. Said male employee barely talks to me. The food manager had me work 12 days straight and only gave me 3 days off in 21 days plus when I came down with a stomach bug (oh I wonder how I could have gotten sick…) he threw a fit that I called out. Our new manager seems to be buying into the story that I’m a huge troublemaker and has basically had me turn into Cinderella. Seriously, I do all the cleaning. All of it. It’s gotten so bad that my roommate, who is my co-worker (we coined the term “froomer” for friend-roommate-coworker) has actually decided to transfer to another store to get away from our food manager and our racist store manager. So why do I stay? I worked to hard to get the money that I make now, I have job security because no matter how much they hate it, I’ve never done anything wrong and I get medical. Full medical. Can’t leave that.

04) Blasts From The Past: In the last week, not one but TWO old flames have come back asking to talk to them again and/or date them again. I’m not interested. They’re in the past for a reason. But it’s a nice feeling when attractive men come back and tell you they need you in their lives again. For now though, I’m perfectly content to work hard, go on lots of long walks, cuddle up with my kitten Adonis and read or marathon the show GIRLS which I only keep watching because of Adam Driver’s character, Adam Sackler. Seriously. I want an Adam Sackler in my life. Boyfriend goals man. (At least for now – only on beginning of season 3 so no spoilers!)

05) The Light At The End: But it’s not all bad news. My new PC is up and running and kicks some major ass. I freaking love Skyrim! I’m finally able to start saving money. And it feels great. I have almost $300 in savings and all my bills are paid. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a nice feeling. And in less than a month, I’ll be on a flight to California! I’ll be seeing my uncle and cousin and their family and enjoy staying in San Marcos for a weekend, a weekend that I definitely deserve.

So, that’s my life. How has yours been? I’ve missed you guys! I want to hear all about your stories. I’ve had nothing but issues with my old comment system so for now, I have Disqus. I’d love it if you’d leave a comment and I WILL reply back! In the meantime, I leave you with this awesome playlist I found on 8 tracks. Give it a listen and enjoy!

Review: Sage’s Eyes by V.C. Andrews

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

It was as if I had traveled through time and for a moment lived and understood the life I would never have.

Sixteen-year-old Sage is a lonely child. Her adoptive parents watch her obsessively, as if studying her for warning signs of…something. And maybe they’re right to – even she can’t make sense of the strange things she sees and hears. She possesses knowledge that other teenagers don’t, that her parents and teachers-no adult-could possibly have.

So when Sage finally makes a friend who understands her alarming gift, he becomes her confidant, a precarious link to the truth about who she really is. For Sage and the alluring new boy at school share many things in common. Perhaps, they’ll learn, far too many things.

Expected Publication: January 26, 2016

I have been a huge fan of V.C. Andrews novels since I first discovered them when I was about 9 years old – so about 26 years ago. In fact, the first website I ever created was actually a V.C. Andrews fan and roleplay site called Midnight Whispers (and no, we will not discuss how ugly the first incarnations were) and I kept it around for years – approximately 8 years, in fact. I have loved both the original VCA books and even some of the books written by the ghostwriter, Andrew Neiderman – and chances are that if you have enjoyed a V.C. Andrews, you have read and also liked one written by Neiderman as he has written every one of the books since V.C. Andrews’ death in 1986. While My Sweet Audrina is my most favorite of all of the books, my favorite Andrew Neiderman written book is still Ruby. Interestingly enough, the Landry series is actually a tiny Easter egg in Sage’s Eyes.

I won’t lie. I miss the old magic of the older Neiderman stories. Even if they were slightly formulaic, they were at least intriguing and sucked you into the story. The newer ones … maybe it’s because they were so much shorter (instead of 5 book series they’ve been cut down to two books or even standalone novels that seem rushed) but the characters aren’t nearly as fleshed out, the storylines seem to become more and more outrageous, often feeling like things are added for simple shock value and they’re following trends – I highly doubt that V.C. Andrews would have ever written a vampire series … And sadly, Sage’s Eyes is no different.

I wanted to like Sage but quite honestly, in the attempt of trying to make her otherworldly and wise beyond her years, Sage just comes across as a bitter know-it-all who clearly needs to grow a backbone and learn how to confront her clearly unstable parents. The book was very slow, in fact it dragged. I felt like the same lines were said over and over again. “Your parents care for you, they know best.” “Don’t give up on your parents, Sage.” “Have you had any visions?” “Don’t talk about your visions.” Rinse and repeat. I was pretty sure where the story was going (for the most part) when Sage finds some interesting bones hidden in the house. I’m disappointed that the bones weren’t discussed further, which leads me to assume that there is a sequel in the works even though I haven’t found any information on a possible sequel. There were a few things that were left unanswered, besides the bones and I don’t understand why they were left that way, things that were mentioned several times, such as young appearances.

SPOILER: My biggest issue with this particular novel is that if you’re going to write a story about the Wiccan religion, which is an actual religion, at least get facts straight or don’t use the term Wiccan. If you want to write a book about magick and spirituality, that’s fine. Make up a magical religion for your character, call her a witch but don’t call it Wiccan unless it’s actually based in some sort of fact. Otherwise it’s a slap in the face to any actual Wiccans that are reading the story. I’d be just as annoyed if I read a book where the character was supposed to be Catholic and was portrayed like sacrificing newborns or stoning non-virgins was an everyday occurrence.

Sage’s Eyes isn’t the worst book I’ve read. But it’s also not very good and to have V.C. Andrews name on it, to me, is a shame. It doesn’t contain any of the old VCA or Neiderman magic. It truly feels rushed, is repetitive and seems incomplete. If you’re looking for a quick read, it certainly fits. If you’re looking for a gripping, family saga, this is not it. Personally, it wasn’t my cup of tea at all. I hate to be so blunt, but I am honest.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away …

The Force Awakens

I’m sorry. I know. I keep apologizing for the same thing but it’s true. My lack of an appearance online is due to work. I’ve been stuck on 4am shifts (which are now 3am for the holidays) for two months now. And it’s been totally wiping me out. I’m sleeping an average of 36-40 hours a week. I work an average of about the same. I got behind on christmas gifts, decorating for christmas and pretty much life in general. I’ve barely been able to see my friends because I get up at 3am (now 2am) am at work by 4am, work til 1pm, get home by 2pm and try to stay awake until 7pm where I rinse and repeat.

My days off have not been consecutive so I can’t catch up on sleep. Heck, I haven’t even seen my boyfriend in 3 weeks. But, hey. I have a job. One that has been major stressful because of my boss. Who finally stepped down and is leaving the department this week. It’s been a long time coming. Hopefully afterwards, my stress can diminish. And when I say stress, I mean stress: my hair has been falling out faster than is normal, I have a stress rash on my legs and near my shoulders and I broke down last week because of a panic attack caused buy claustrophobia from the disaster that is my department. This is why I have been MIA. Oy. But let’s move on, shall we?

December Fun 1

In the last few weeks, I have managed to at least have SOME fun. I decided to take the plunge and became an Avon Representative! I haven’t had much time to do anything with it as of yet, but am planning a local Avon Party at my house after the holidays. I’e always liked Avon products and once upon a time, I actually was a representative for their sister company, mark. So I decided, why not take the plunge. If you’re interested in some Avon, whether to buy or just to pick my brain for honest reviews, let me know! I also offer discounts and free products ;) Adonis sure loves the boxes that they send me my products in. It’s a win-win all around.

My roommate Rachel and I also found some time to bake and decorate a cake for my friend Irene’s mother’s birthday! I made a chocolate stout cake with dark buttercream frosting ad we dusted it with edible gold dust. It was a ton of fun to make and I hope that it was as good as it looks! I will say, the remnants of the pieces we cut off to frost it, were freaking delicious and I need to make another cake asap. For myself! Yum.

I enjoyed celebrating Hanukkah this year and introducing my roommate to the holiday. We also checked out a few thrift shops around town where I managed to pick up a tree skirt, a jolly Father Christmas figurine, an angel for our tree and the jackpot, ornaments exactly like the ones I grew up with. And I got them all for less than $8. The ornaments were the best find. After my mom passed, I was evicted from the house (I had moved back in after my ex and I had split up and also because she was sick – long story) and one of the things I left behind, was the box of all our Christmas ornaments. These slightly tacky and ugly ornaments were the highlight of every Christmas season for me. They were the first things I’d add to the tree. So finding them, after all these years, felt like a special kind of fate. I haven’t felt the Christmas spirit since Mom passed. It’s hard when your only parent passes and your brother decides you’re to blame. Haven’t had either in my life for almost 8 years now. But this, this helped a bit. Time to start my own traditions with these little gems.

December Fun 2

Rachel and I also managed to find some time this weekend to create individual ornaments for our co-workers. We thought it would be a fun little different gift. None of us have ever done ornaments for each other at work, plus it was a blast trying to figure out how to make them all different.

But the highlight of this December, for me at least, and let’s be honest, if you know me even a tiny bit you already know the answer to this — STAR WARS! Yup. Rachel and I had tickets for The Force Awakens, at 7pm on Thursday night. And boy, was it packed. 300 of us in the theater at one time. There were costumes, and silly pictures being taken, and tons of Chewbacca impersonations going on. I didn’t dress up, but I was crazy Star wars blinged out. Had on my vintage Star Wars t-shirt, my Darth Vader earrings and socks, my Star Wars Cover Girl lipstick, Imperial dogtag and my TIE Fighter necklace, not to mention, the best part of all, the Darth Vader purse that Rachel had gotten me for my birthday!

I was ridiculously excited all day, I started the day off by making Death Star waffle for Rachel and I, courtesy of the waffle iron that C bought me as a late birthday gift. We passed the day by running errands and picking up last minute Christmas gifts. I even had a Darth Vader key made for myself, since we’ve decided to renew our lease when it comes time in May. Finally, it was Star Wars time! I was nervous, anxious and happy all at one time. I was worried that my hopes were too high. But I was very happy with the way the movie turned out. It was a lot funnier than I thought it would be, and there was still the typical Star Wars darkness that is in every movie. The general feel was very much like the original series. There was CGI but on a very small scale, pretty much only where it needed to be, unlike the prequels. You could tell the focus was on the story itself and on the character relationships. I absolutely love Rey and have my own theories about her. My main follows that JJ Abrams is lying about her origins – which he’s done in past movies. I totally called three different plot points – but don’t worry, I won’t say each ones. If you’re curious, I’m always up for a discussion if you comment! And don’t get me started on Kylo Ren. He may be, as one friend put it, “a whiny man-child” but I love him, temper and all. Mainly because, just as with Darth Vader, I get him. I understand his issues. I also love BB-8, more than I ever loved r2-d2. I think BB-8 is freaking adorable, so I couldn’t pass up the chance to buy a BB-8 straw. The movie is not perfect, but then no movie really is. You don’t get all the answers. But then, there are still two more movies to go.

I probably won’t get another chance to post until Christmas, so I’m taking my chance now to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas, a Happy Yule and a wonderful New Year!

How’s your December going? Did you see Star Wars? I’d love to hear all about you month, your thoughts on the movie and what you’re doing for Christmas! Please do not leave any spoilers in the comments as this is a spoiler-free zone. Merry Christmas!
