Tuneage Tuesday #8

I absolutely love music. I can’t go through a day easily without it. Even at work (at least with my early shifts) I’ll have one of three music apps on my phone playing before the store opens. While working on a blog or even writing in my journal, I have to listen to one of my several playlists on itunes (playlists are the best things ever) or on 8tracks. Because of my love of music, I plan on sharing one song a week here on my blog. Either something I’ve always loved or a new song I’ve recently discovered.

No One’s Gonna Love You – Band of Horses
“It’s looking like a limb torn off
Or altogether just taken apart
We’re reeling through an endless fall
We are the ever-living ghost of what once was”

I immediately fell in love with Band of Horses (an American rock band from Seattle) after I first heard No One’s Gonna Love You back in 2007. I had been split up from my boyfriend of almost 8 years for about 6 months when I heard this song. I knew I was better off without him but at the same time, it still hurt and I definitely reveled in the melancholy breakup songs at that point. And while the lyrics are clearly that of a breakup, the tune wasn’t super depressing and I began to feel hope as I listened to it that while I still loved him, and may always have a place for him in my heart, that I’d move on. And I did. Weirdly enough, we’re still friends. I enjoy seeing his posts of his wife and daughter on facebook and I feel happy for him, despite the crap he did to me. It’s life.

Band of Horses became very popular in my itunes library that year and I still love them. Most of their songs are slow, some are very melancholy but not all. I highly recommend Laredo, NW Apt and also Infinite Arms as well.

Don’t Love You – TV on the Radio
“It’s been said best by you
Been said best before
But I just want to let you know
I don’t love you anymore.”

I had never even heard of TV on the Radio (an American indie rock band from Brooklyn) until a (now ex) friend introduced me to their song Wolf Like Me back in 2009. It was fantastically catchy and I immediately played it like 3 times, singing along loudly each time. It was right after that I looked up several of their songs. My favorite of all of them is Don’t Love You, but I also really like Wolf Like Me, Staring at the Sun and Love Dog. Many of their songs are actually great for getting ready to go out on a date or for a makeout mix. I also add them to my workout mixes as the fast songs are perfect for getting your blood pumped while going for a long walk or doing cardio.

Such Great Heights – The Postal Service
“They won’t see us waving from such great
Heights, ‘come down now,’ they’ll say
But everything looks perfect from far away,”

I’ve been in love with The Postal Service (an American electropop band) since I first discovered them in 2004. I had been watching the movie Wicker Park when I heard their cover of the great Phil Collins song, Against All Odds. I instantly fell in love and googled them as soon as I got home. After that, I was hooked. The Postal Service is unique in that it’s what is called a “superband” made up of Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie, Jimmy Tamborello from Dntel & Headset and Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley. The group is now defunct, but that doesn’t change how awesome their music is. They are a great band to listen to while going for a walk along the beach/river/stream or to have playing in the background while cooking or talking with friends.
