Mixes: Summer In Seattle ☀

I’m a sucker for a great mix cd and I have a horrible habit of creating mix after mix when I’m bored. One of my goals is to create the ultimate collection of themed mix cd’s so that I can always find something, no matter how obscure the mood I am in may be. But I’m also a sucker for a great summer playlist. One that features upbeat sounds (even if the lyrics aren’t the happiest) and one that makes for great background noise when going for a drive, walking through the park or just relaxing on the porch in the sun. And since I happen to live right near one of the best cities in the US, I decided that it was time to create a mix showcasing my love of Summer and Seattle. Which brings us to my most recent mix:

I hope you enjoy it. I added a nice mix of newer and older songs as well as alternative and indie with just a touch of light rap (had to represent Macklemore!) What are your go to summer songs? Let me know by leaving a comment!

Tuneage Tuesday #5

I absolutely love music. I can’t go through a day easily without it. Even at work (at least with my early shifts) I’ll have one of three music apps on my phone playing before the store opens. While working on a blog or even writing in my journal, I have to listen to one of my several playlists on itunes (playlists are the best things ever) or on 8tracks. Because of my love of music, I plan on sharing one song a week here on my blog. Either something I’ve always loved or a new song I’ve recently discovered.

Young and Beautiful – Lana Del Rey
“I’ve seen the world, lit it up
As my stage now
Channeling angels in the new age now
Hot summer days, rock ‘n’ roll”

A newer find to me, Lana Del Rey (an American singer-songwriter) draws heavily from 1950’s and 1960’s Americana and has described herself as a “self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra.” I first discovered Lana Del Rey in the summer of 2012. I had heard of her long before that but never really paid any attention to her music but it was hearing the song “Diet Mountain Dew” that really made me start listening to her music and I became a fast fan. I was already in love with her husky, sensual voice and her (sometimes cliche but) memorable lyrics, but hearing “Young and Beautiful” from The Great Gatsby soundtrack really cemented my love for her. It was a perfect addition to the soundtrack. Hauntingly beautiful, sad and full of love and pain, just like Daisy and Jay. And as if that wasn’t enough, her rendition of “Once Upon A Dream” from the upcoming Maleficent movies? Chilling perfection. Lana Del Rey is the perfect accompaniment to a late night journal writing session and a delicious cocktail.

Closer – Kings of Leon
“You shimmy-shook my boat,
Leavin’ me stranded all in love on my own
Do you think of me?”

I discovered the Kings of Leon (a Nashville rock band) about ten years ago, right around the time that I discovered that my fiance at the time, was cheating on me. I was very depressed and whenever I feel depressed, I start listening to a LOT of music. “California Waiting” became my anthem at the time. It was just what I needed to help snap me out of my funk and get me active again. After that, I was hooked on KOL. Even now, I still reach for some KOL whenever I need to snap out of a funk. They have become one of my favorite bands and I am incredibly pissed that I am unable to go see them in Seattle on Friday. But life goes on. As much as I love the song “California Waiting,” the song “Closer” has been my number one favorite by them, since I first heard it. I love the melancholy lyrics and the haunted feeling of the instrumentals.
